nt on any new volkswagen. visit vwdealer.com today. you're watching cbs 5 eyewitness news in high definition. someone blew out his windows at 60 miles an hour. the marine recruiter shot at on a bay area freeway. good evening. i'm ken bastida. >> and i'm elizabeth cook. cbs 5 reporter kiet do shows us the bullet holes. >> reporter: we're live here just off of highway 85, a short distance from where this all went down. detectives are saying this is a sensitive situation. they took great pains to keep this marine corps officer away from the media. they whisked him out a side door and away from our cameras. whoever opened fire on this marine is still out there. the government issued pontiac g6 sedan was riddled with bullets on the driver's side. both rear windows were busted out.

look closely on the front passenger door and you can see one bullet traveled through the car and nearly pierced the metal from the inside. the recruiter was traveling southbound on highway 85 when the gunman opened fire. >> he noticed there's a pop. he pulls over. and quickly he discovers that he's been shot at more than once, multiple times, by someone either who was on the freeway or on the side of the freeway. we haven't confirmed that yet. >> reporter: investigators shut down the freeway for two hours. at one point, they walked in tight formation looking for evidence. the vehicle was unmarked and had federal government license plates. >> we believe it doesn't appear to be targeted, because the marine corps officer had a covered jacket on. he was in uniform but he had a jacket on. his uniform wasn't visible, or at least easily visible from the outside. >> reporter: we captured two marines on camera at the scene. however, it is not clear which

one, if either, was the driver. >> the shooter is still at large? >> at this time, there's no other victims as far as we know. there was no injury to the one solo victim. >> the case, thankfully. >> reporter: csi technicians also now try and recover the slugs and calculate the trajectory of the bullet. if you saw anything, the sheriff's office wants you to give them a call. live in cupertino, kiet do, cbs 5. >> if you heard a loud boom on the peninsula, this is why. the bomb squad how to blow up very old chemicals found inside a house in san mateo. some sort of acids and ether were in the house, so they boarded up the home, detonated the chemicals. luckily, no one was hurt. a bay area teenager shot by a lifelong friend wants him to know that he's forgiven. he was so desperate to give him the message that he reached out to him online from his hospital

bed. he told cbs 5's christin ayers he did it to save his friend's life. >> reporter: 18-year-old cody hawthorne never could have imagined that he'd be staring down the barrel of a gun held by the man he calls his best friend. >> it would be the last thing i would ever expect. >> reporter: he says his friend sammy is battling a mental illness. three weeks ago what started at an argument took a violent turn when turner, an avid hunter, pulled a gun. >> i noticed like there was a hole in my shirt. >> and that's when cody just came in and came right here, and said, mommy, i've been shot. >> reporter: he was rushed to a hospital. but even as he laid with the bullet lodged in his back, he could think of only one thing. >> as soon as he came out of surgery, the first thing he said , where is sammy? >> i love you,, bro.

just come out. >> reporter: they made this video and posted it on youtube. >> i forgive you, bro. i love you. everything is going to be okay. >> reporter: he was hoping turner would see it and surrender. >> i knew he wasn't in the right mind and i didn't want him to do something stupid. >> reporter: turner turned himself in and is in custody now. >> i want him to eventually be able to get his head straight and be normal and like live a normal life. >> reporter: turner is now facing an attempted murder charge. hessler has not spoken to him since the shooting but says he'd be willing to go before the judge to ask that his friend be given a reduced sentence. in vallejo, christin ayers, cbs 5. another chilly night across the bay area. >> right now in san francisco it's about 46 and going down. meteorologist julie watts in

the weather center says big changes are on the way. >> that's right. we're already seeing temperatures dropping this evening. in fact, freezing in santa rosa, 32 degrees right now. a bit warmer in san jose at 45. 46 in san francisco, as you mentioned. 35 in livermore. and 34 in concord. yes, these temperatures are chilly and we are going to see cold temperatures overnight, just not quite as cold as last night, due in part to some increasing clouds. it will be wet and windy for the extended forecast. i'll time it all out for you, coming up in just a bit. if you think it's cold here in the plains, drivers in several states are being warned not to drive at all because of all that snow. this was the scene in nebraska where crews worked very hard to keep roads open. in newtown, connecticut, three more families buried their children today, along with the teacher who gave her life trying to save them.

>> reporter: firefighters from across the northeast came to honor seven-year-old daniel bardon. he wanted to be a firefighter some day. >> firefighters were here paying tribute to this young child. and all the souls that were lost in this community. >> reporter: sandy hooks fire department also stood at attention for caroline's funeral procession. she loved to draw and dance. >> it's just heartbreaking when you see the small casket. the girl is six years old, but she obviously was a lovely girl that gave joy to a lot of people, and that's what they have to hold on to. >> reporter: charlotte bacon, the seventh student, was remembered for her love of animals and the color pink. and at teacher victoria soto's funeral, the crowd was large. soto has been held as a hero for shielding the kids from the

gunman. inside the church, singer paul simon performed sound of silence. ♪ ♪ the sound of silence ♪ >> now, we've learned that the gunman's mother was on vacation the day before the shooting. according to cnn, nancy lanza checked into a luxury hotel and checked out thursday afternoon. she was by herself and friends say she often took mini vacations, leaving her son alone in the house. and there's still no clear evidence as to what triggered adam lanza's rampage. the medical examiner is bringing in a geneticist to see if lanza might have had a medical condition that could have played a role. investigators are also waiting for toxicology results to see if lanza was on any medication. president obama promising near action to curb gun violence. >> i will use all the powers of this office to help advance

efforts aimed at prevents more tragedies like this. we won't prevent them all, but that can't be an excuse not to try. it will take commitment and compromise and most of all, courage. >> the president wants congress to vote early next year to renew the ban on military-style assault weapons and outlaw sales of high-capacity ammunition clips. he also wants to close the gun show loophole, so all buyers are subject to federal background checks. but it doesn't end there. >> we're going to need to work on making access to mental health care at least as easy as access to a gun. we're going to need to look more closely at a culture that all too often glorifies guns and violence. >> and the president has put vice president biden in charge of a governmentwide effort to come up with concrete proposals by january. not all guns are created equal. there are automatics, semiautomatics, and the list goes on. the cbs 5 reporter phil shows

across the country. a blistering report on security lapses at the u.s. consulate in benghazi has prompted the resignation of some state department members. they all quit. the independent panel report called security at the u.s. post, quote, grossly inadequate to deal with the attack. >> frankly, the state department had not given benghazi the security, both physical and personnel resources, it needed. >> the report also says the state department did not have a clear picture of the danger at the compound. it also says the state department ignored requests from ambassador chris stevens for more security. stevens and three other americans were killed in the attack on september 11. at least three high-profile conservatives believe secretary of state hillary clinton is faking her concussion to get

singer jenni rivera today. more than 6,000 people attended the public memorial in los angeles. a number of celebrities were also there, including actor lou diamond phillips. rivera and six others died earlier this month when the jet they were on crashed in northern mexico. los angeles police say they have figured out who the hacker is who caused a panic in hollywood. police say he's responsible for a serious of phony 911 calls that sent swat teams to celebrity homes. he's only 12 years old! >> reporter: law enforcement sources confirmed that a 12- year-old boy was responsible for orchestrating swat teams to the home of justin bieber and ashton kutcher.
